The YVC men's basketball team finished the shortened spring season strong on Wednesday night with a 101-83 road win over Blue Mountain.
MarJon Beauchamp improved upon his league-leading scoring average with a game-high 38 points and also grabbed 10 rebounds as the Yaks outscored the Timberwolves 57-34 in the second half to finish at 7-6 overall.
Three others also reached double figures —
Alexzander Delgado (15), Christian Murphy (14) and
Erin Chamble (12) — while
Bryan Strom had nine points, four rebounds and three steals in a starting role. Murphy and Chamble also had a good night on the boards, each snaring eight rebounds, while Delgado chipped in with seven. The Yaks won the rebounding battle 42-34, but they turned the ball over 18 times to the Timberwolves' 14. But YVC was so hot from the floor that it didn't matter in the end. Led by Beauchamp's 10-of-19 shooting night — which included 5-of-10 from long range — the Yaks shot 57.6% (38-of-66) overall and 38.9% (7-of-18) from behind the arc.
YVC had another solid outing Tuesday night at Treasure Valley, but fell 107-106 in overtime despite Beauchamp's monster 50-point effort. He also grabbed 11 rebounds as YVC battled back from a 11-point halftime deficit to force OT.
Murphy backed up Beauchamp with 19 points and eight rebounds while shooting 8-of-11 from the floor. Delgado also turned in a workman-like effort with 16 points, four rebounds, three assists and three steals.
Teammates (and twin brothers) Bryan and
Bryce Strom each recorded five steals and Chamble had two as YVC recorded 17 takeaways for the game. Bryan added four points, four rebounds and five assists, while Bryce had six points and three boards.
Chamble scored five points and
Mason Tinley contributed six points off the bench in the loss.
YVC finished with a record of 7-7. Wenatchee Valley took the unofficial NWAC East league title at 11-2, followed by North Idaho (4-1), Columbia Basin (7-4), YVC (7-7), and Walla Walla (4-4).
