The Yakima Valley men's basketball team is off to a solid start, posting a pair of victories at last weekend's Turkey Tournament at Skagit Valley College.
In Friday's opener, the Yaks took down Peninsula 97-84 behind four players in double figures.
Jose Brown led the way with 27 points on 10-of-12 shooting, while Clay Delp pitched in 23 points, six rebounds and five assists, making 7-of-10 shot attempts. Brown also had five rebounds, four assists and four steals,
Jaxson Goldsmith scored 18 on 8-of-12 shooting, and
Amari Harris scored 13 to go with six rebounds.
Fabian Alvarado added seven points and five assists off the bench and
Jaymon Wright snagged a team-high five steals as the Yaks shot a blistering 68.5% (37-of-54) from the field.
The next day against Skagit Valley was a different story as the Yaks fell behind by 25 points at the half on the way to a 91-65 defeat. YVC's offensive production cooled off considerably, shooting just 42.6% (26-of-61) and making only 2-of-19 three-point attempts. Delp and Brown each scored 16 points, Goldsmith had 13, and
Zion Jones and Wright each added six.
The Yaks bounced back in Sunday's tournament finale, however, cruising past Whatcom by a final score of 100-62. Goldsmith was on fire, hitting seven three-pointers on the way to a game-high 40 points. Delp also had a big game with 20 points, 11 assists, seven rebounds and five steals, while Wright contributed a double-double with 18 points and 13 boards. Harris pitched in nine points, Brown had eight rebounds and four steals, and Alvarado delivered eight points and five assists. YVC shot 48.7% (38-of-78) from the field and won the rebounding battle 44-36.
The Yaks (2-1 overall) will play three more at this weekend's Bigfoot Classic in Spokane, beginning with Linn-Benton on Friday, followed by match-ups with Everett on Saturday and Fraser Valley on Sunday.
