Sherar Gymnasium

Sherar Gymnasium is the epicenter of the Yaks intercollegiate athletic program, which consists of six sport programs: men’s baseball, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, women’s soccer, women’s softball and women’s volleyball. Additionally, Sherar Gym houses the entirety of the YVC physical education curriculum for its students and the YVC Athletic Hall of Fame.

Constructed in 1957, Sherar Gym originally consisted of just the main basketball court, four staff offices and two locker rooms.

An addition was built in 1965 that included the present-day fitness center, yoga room, varsity men’s and women’s locker rooms, training room, front foyer area, staff offices and conference room.

Upon Glen Sherar’s retirement in 1972, the building was formally named after him. The college’s first athletic director from 1946 – 1972, Sherar originally came to the college in 1935 as an English instructor and basketball and tennis coach.

In 2012, the gym’s main floor was dedicated as Crosier Court in honor of long-time, Hall of Fame basketball coach Ellwood Crosier, who served YVC from 1958 – 1995.  An alumnus of YVC, Crosier was a member of the class of 1955.
