Darrett and Widner Earn Top YVC Athletic Honors for 23-24

Sophomores Javonte Darrett (Men's Basketball)  and Brynn Widner (Volleyball) captured YVC's top athletic honors for 2023-24 at yesterday's annual athletic awards ceremony held in Sherar Gymnasium.

Darrett, a 6'6 guard out of Kent-Meridian High School in Kent, WA, received the "Larry Densley" award which goes to the outstanding male athlete of the year.  For the year, Darrett averaged 24.4 points per game and 9.9 rebounds per game-- the scoring average was good for second in the entire NWAC.  For those efforts, he was named the East Region's "Most Valuable Player" and received the conference's "Player of the Week" for consecutive weeks (January 22-28 and January 29 - February 4, 2024.)

Widner, a Defensive Specialist/Libero from Zillah, WA, earned the "Mary Sherar" Award which signifies the outstanding female athlete of the year.  Widner helped lead the Yaks to Third Place at the NWAC championships last November.  Finishing with 589 digs (fourth-most in the entire NWAC), she was named to the East Region First Team and was named the NWAC's "Defensive Player of the Week" twice during the year.  In addition, Widner was selected as an "NWAC Academic All-Star" for her efforts in the classroom.
