Athlete 1959-1961

A 1959 graduate of Mabton high School, Stottlemyre skyrocketed to national sports prominence when he started three games for the New York Yankees in the 1964 World Series.  He went on to gain superstar acclaim during an eleven-year major league career with the Yankees.  During that time he appeared in five All-Star games, had three twenty-win seasons, and tossed forty shutouts.  He compiled a 164-139 career record with a 2.97 earned run average during his career with the Yankees.

Stottlemyre signed with the Yankees directly out of Yakima Valley College where he pitched on the 1960 and 1961 championship teams.  YVC was undefeated in league play both years and Mel pitched a one-hit shutout in the 1961 championship series.

After his retirement as a player in 1975, he served as organizational pitching coach for the Seattle Mariners until 1982.  In 1983 he assisted YVC as the pitching coach and in 1984 returned to the majors as pitching coach for the New York Mets.  He was inducted into the NWAC Hall of Fame in 1994.
