After taking care of business against 11 straight in-state opponents, the Yakima Valley women's basketball team suffered its first defeat against Washington team in two months last Wednesday, falling to Columbia Basin 74-51 on the road. The Yaks fell behind by 10 points in the first quarter and trailed by 18 at the half against the Hawks, who increased their lead to 28 through three quarters.
Jewelisa Landa and
Britany Phillips scored 11 points apiece to lead the Yaks, who shot just 33.9% (21-of-62) from the floor.
Ashlynn Sylve added 10 and
Brooklynne Sylve had nine, while
Sofia Alvarado contributed five points and a team-high six rebounds off the bench. Four players chipped in five rebounds —
Avery Schumacher,
Gwen Dawes, Phillips and Landa — but the Yaks were unable to overcome a 46-39 deficit on the glass.
YVC returned home Saturday to face Treasure Valley and emerged with a 71-66 victory to keep pace with three other teams in the NWAC East at 3-1. YVC trailed by 12 at the half, but they erased most of the Chukars' advantage in the third with a 23-13 run. Landa and Phillips each scored 18 points to lead the offense and
Ashlynn Sylve added 17 as YVC shot 37.5% (24-of-64) from the floor.
Brooklynne Sylve added 13 points and Phillips pulled down eight rebounds to help the Yaks earn a 39-38 advantage on the boards.
The Yaks (12-5 overall) will return to action Wednesday at home against Big Bend before traveling to Walla Walla on Saturday. Both of this week's opponents are tied atop the NWAC East along with YVC and CBC.
