The Yakima Valley baseball team continued its preseason surge last Friday at home, sweeping a doubleheader from Tacoma to improve to 16-6 overall.
Game one came down to the wire, with YVC claiming a 13-11 win despite committing eight fielding errors. The Yaks trailed 8-7 through five innings but scored five runs in the sixth to take a four-run advantage.
Cody Densley,
Nate Olmos and
Will Feltus each recorded RBI singles in the inning before relievers
Oliver Wilday,
Tristan Pulliam and
Gus Musial closed it out. Wilday picked up the win, allowing one run and three hits over 2 2/3 innings, and Musial earned the save despite giving up two walks and an earned run in the top of the ninth.
Garren Gooler finished 3-for-6 with four RBI, including a two-run triple,
Jackson Walker went 2-for-4 with a two-RBI triple, Feltus finished 2-for-3, and
Diego Dickson went 2-for-2.
YVC had a little more breathing room in game two, scoring five runs in the first and two in the second on the way to a 9-1 victory. After Dickson and Olmos were both hit by pitches with the bases loaded,
Kasey Newton delivered a bases-clearing double to give the Yaks a 5-0 lead. Gooler had a fielder's choice RBI and
Jace Fillmore added a sac fly to push the lead to seven, while Dickson added an RBI single in the fifth and Feltus had a bases-loaded walk in the seventh. Starting pitcher
Zach Swanson earned the win, giving up two hits and two walks while striking out four over 3 2/3 innings. Reliever
Zeb Blattstein was equally solid, posting the same line as Swanson, while
Ay Italasano pitched a scoreless ninth.
The Yaks, who are 9-3 in the month of March, will open NWAC East play Wednesday at Blue Mountain before hosting the Timberwolves for two more on Saturday.
