The week started out well for the Yakima Valley softball team, which won the first game of a Wednesday doubleheader against Wenatchee by a score of 6-5. But things began to go south in the sixth inning of game two, when the Yaks allowed three runs over the final two innings on the way to a 12-6 defeat.
Pitcher
Briley Ingram helped herself with a three-RBI double in the first, staking YVC to a 4-0 lead. But the Knights stormed back with five runs in the third and one in the fifth. The Yaks kept it close with an RBI double by
Sami Staley in the fifth and an RBI fielder's choice by
Emma Stamp in the sixth. Ingram led the offense, going 3-for-3, and also allowed seven earned runs and nine hits over 5 2/3 innings.
Tylee Cossitt pitched the final 1 1/3, giving up three earned runs and four hits. Stamp finished 2-for-4 and
Glory Estabrook had a double, helping the Yaks collect 10 hits.
In game one, the Yaks took a 5-3 lead in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single by Staley and a two-run double by Estabrook.
Abbygale Sheridan scored on wild pitch in the third and drove in a run in the sixth, while Staley added another RBI single in the second to finish 2-for-2. Estabrook earned the win in the circle, giving up three earned runs, nine hits and four walks while striking out five.
YVC looked to bounce back Saturday at Walla Walla and nearly walked away with a game-one victory. But the Warriors scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh to hand the Yaks a 12-11 defeat. Estabrook had a big day at the plate, going 4-for-5 with a home run and three runs scored. Stampe went 2-for-5 with two RBI, Staley drove in a pair of runs and Ingram added a two-RBI double. Estabrook and Ingram shared the pitching duties, allowing a combined 20 hits and 11 earned runs while striking out five.
Game two was close until the fourth, when the Warriors exploded for eight runs off Estabrook, Ingram and Cossitt on the way to a 12-3 win. Cossitt and
Kylee Bradley each went 2-for-3 with an RBI, and Stamp brought home a run on a fielder's choice in the first inning.
YVC (5-5 NWAC East, 12-12 overall) will return to action Friday with a home doubleheader against Spokane.
