With the postseason push underway, the Yakima Valley women's basketball team is trending in the wrong direction. After suffering pair of setbacks to Treasure Valley and Walla Walla last week, the Yaks fell into fifth place in the NWAC East with three games remaining.
Â
Now 5-6 in conference play, YVC would need to win at least two of those contests to remain in contention for one of the East's four playoff bids. Two of those opponents, Columbia Basin and Big Bend, are among the top three in the standings, meaning the Yaks will face an uphill climb.
Â
Last Wednesday at Treasure Valley, the Yaks trailed by just five points at halftime, but were outscored 34-13 down the stretch to lose 63-37 to the Chukars — a team they beat at home on Jan. 17.
Ashlynn Sylve was the only YVC player to reach double figures, scoring 16 on 7-of-11 shooting.
Britany Phillips added nine points and seven rebounds,
Brooklynne Sylve scored six points and
Sofia Alvarado grabbed 11 rebounds off the bench.
Â
YVC faced a much tougher opponent Saturday at home, falling to second-place Walla Walla 88-64. Phillips had a solid outing with 27 points and 11 boards, and
Brooklynne Sylve and
Gwen Dawes scored 11 points each as the Yaks were unable to overcome a 20-point halftime deficit.
Lyris Davis scored six points off the bench and
Jewelisa Landa scored five despite going 1-of-7 from the floor.Â
Â
The Yaks (14-10 overall) will host third-place Columbia Basin on Wednesday and then welcome last-place Spokane on Saturday.
