The Yakima Valley soccer team's three-game unbeaten streak came to an abrupt ending this week with a pair of losses to two of the NWAC East's best teams.
Â
After improving to 2-1-1 in conference play with back-to-back wins, the Yaks visited second-place Columbia Basin on Sept. 26 and lost 9-2. The Hawks took an early lead with a goal in the second minute, but just 30 seconds later,
Esperanza Haro took a pass from
Addie Messner to even the score. CBC tacked on four more first-half goals before
Avah Farias pulled one back for the Yaks in the 58th minute. But a late flurry of goals by the Hawks ended the threat.
Â
YVC was outshot 28-8 on the afternoon, with Haro totaling five shots, including four on frame.
Nataly Pacheco delivered two shots on goal, while goalkeeper
Caitlin Tobin collected eight saves despite suffering an injury.
Â
The Yaks returned home Wednesday to face league-leading and undefeated Spokane, falling 9-1. The Sasquatch took a 3-0 lead through the first 15 minutes and tacked on two more before halftime to take a 5-0 advantage. Pacheco scored an unassisted goal two minutes into the second half, but YVC's defense proved to be no match for the high-powered Spokane attack.
Ariana Araiza filled in for Tobin in goal and snagged 10 saves on the afternoon. Additional stats were unavailable on NWACsports.com.Â
YVC (2-3-1 East, 2-5-1 overall) has a week off and will look to rebound Oct. 10 at home against Walla Walla, which earned a 6-0 win in the teams' first meeting last month. The Yaks will remain at home Oct. 14 against Blue Mountain, a team they tied 2-2 on Sept. 16.
