The YVC soccer team kicked off the season last week at Starfire Sports Complex, dropping its first two matches at the NWAC Friendlies.
In the Aug. 18 opener against South Puget Sound, the Yaks surrendered two goals in the first half and went on to lose 3-0. YVC managed just four shots on goal — two by
Nataly Pacheco — while goalkeeper
Alexis Hageman recorded three saves.
The next day against Klamath, the Yaks gave up a goal in each half on the way to a 2-0 defeat. Despite the setback, the offense picked up the pace with 19 shots, including 14 in the second half.
Returning starter
Esperanza Haro delivered six shots, Pacheco and
Avery Schumacher added four apiece, and
Zyanna Hernandez and
Esmeralda Ramos each had two. Hageman snagged three saves, keeping the Yaks in the game until Klamath tallied an insurance goal in the 89
th minute.
YVC (0-2) will have the next two weeks off before starting NWAC East play on Sept. 12 at Walla Walla and Sept. 16 at Blue Mountain. The home opener against Wenatchee Valley is scheduled for Sept. 19.
