Dr. Hughes came to Yakima Valley College in 1980 as the Dean of Students.  He had served in the same capacity at Centralia College from 1971-80 where he was their athletic commissioner and chaired the NWAC golf committee.  Always a strong advocate for the benefits derived from athletic participation, Dr. Hughes was instrumental in restructuring the YVC Student Financial Code to insure proper funding for extra-curricular programs in sports and the performing arts.  He was a strong supporter of the athletic department as the college hosted conference tournaments in baseball, men and women’s basketball, volleyball, tennis, softball, and golf during his tenure.  He retired from YVC in 1995 after serving for one year as interim President.  Dr. Hughes was inducted into the NWAC Hall of Fame in 1997.
